With it’s colorful past the History of Alternative Medicine is still an open book

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

History of Alternative Medicine can be traced back some 5,000 years where they were mentioned in the ancient scriptures of Egypt, China and India and almost any ancient country in the world. It also dates back some 3,000 years in the western part of the world.

As our search for alternative types of medicine became more intense our attention became focused on the history of alternative medicine.

It is a multi-faceted arena. Now we would learn where it came from and it’s importance in medicine. We began applying our knowledge and became believers.

I had met an energy healer who practiced many types of alternative medicine and invited him into the hospital to meet with our son. He was from China and was very interested in explaining where the history of alternative medicine originated. He said that alternative medicine was practiced for centuries and its concept was based on Taoist philosophy. It had spread to Japan and Korea and is known as the Oriental branch of alternative medicine. He had practiced therapies known as

  • Jinfang
  • Wenbing
  • The culture and traditions of Asian countries is where alternative medicines prevailed for over 5000 years. In India, the alternative medicines were known Ayurveda. Ayurveda has been practiced for thousands and thousands of years and is still in practice. The aim of Ayurveda medicine is balancing the harmony of mind, soul and body which is in line with the Taoist philosophy.

There are historical evidences that surgeries were also performed as part of Ayurvedic treatment in olden days. Ayurveda prescribes alternative medicines for curing common cold,

    stroke,

    paralysis and certain mental diseases.

A review of past medical discoveries reveals how excruciating slowly conventional medicine adopts alternative methods. A classic example of this occurred when a young doctor discovered that contagious disease was being transmitted to hospital patients because medical personnel failed to was their hands.

Our son was transferred from ICU to sub-acute with five staph infections- an infection in almost every opening in his body. Staph infections are rampant in almost every hospital and long term facility in the world.

In the 19th century, thousands of women died every year from childbed fever. The reason for this epidemic was that doctors were performing autopsies and then conducting vaginal exams with their hands covered with decomposing necrotic tissue. The same young doctor who discovered this medical discovery observed that women who used midwives instead of doctors had low rates of childbed fever. When this young doctor published his findings about the importance of hand washing, the medical community reacted with hostility. The prevailing belief at the time was that childbed fever is caused by bad air.

The history of alternative medicine is a long and fascinating one. Many different cultures contributed their traditions to this history whose beliefs we still practice today.

The long and colorful history of alternative medicine is still quite the open book, and all signs point to it remaining this way for some time to come.

Bridging the gap between alternative types of medicine and science

    Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Alternative types of medicine is the use of health care approaches to replace conventional medicine. These types of approaches include oxygen, chiropractic, naturopathy, and homeopathy medicine, among others.

As our son continues to progress the search for alternative types of medicine begins along with the conventional methods already in place. The hospital policies do not cover most of the alternative approaches and in many cases I was told that there are “no clinical case studies” to support many of these methods. But in fact there are many clinical trials that support many of these therapies. The fact is that past medical discoveries reveal how excruciatingly slow the medical establishment adopts novel concepts. Even simple methods to improve medical quality often meet with fierce resistance from the medical establishment, pharmaceutical and insurance companies. The federal government has taken extraordinary steps to censor this type of information and many of the conventional methods the hospitals do support do not have clinical case studies supporting them either.

So we took it upon ourselves to take him to outside sources .

The research and hands on approach in alternative medicine have led to interesting and amazing results. Not all approaches seem to benefit the brain injury population but many do and supplements play a very important role.

Every day, many new studies are published in peer-reviewed journals that reveal better ways of preventing and treating disease.

The term alternative medicine means any healing practice “that does not fall within the realm of conventional medicine.”

History of alternative types of medicine is long and involved.

It dates back to thousands of years ago. Medical history reveals startling examples of scientific discoveries that were suppressed by whatever establishment ruled the day. Rejecting new ideas has long been a common medical ideology and those who fell ill suffered horrendous deaths as a result. Authorities often suppress lifesaving discoveries.

Pro-active research is an important part of applying different therapy.

We researched them all and found many of the energy based therapies worked.

  • They were at least interesting and extremely calming.

  • Reiki is an ancient and profoundly simple system of “laying on of hands” healing derived from Tibetan Buddhism.
  • Japa Imagine that you can attract whatever you want into your life or a loved one’s life just by practicing this form of meditation. For me it helped relieve stress and keeps me focused on our son’s full recovery.

We live in a world where medical discoveries have become routine events. The sheer volume of new findings have overwhelmed physicians. The result is that people are dying needlessly, even though therapies to prevent or treat their diseases already exist.

  • All of the patients had a brain mri before they were admitted into the sub acute facility

brainmri All of the patients had a brain mri before they were admitted into the sub acute facility

Each room has it’s own story.

The brain mri is routine in determining what has happened inside the brain. I know of many patients who had a brain mri and now live in subacute on the fifth floor.

  • In one room there is the once upon a time charge nurse who bears an aneurysm in the middle of a night time shift. He is 35 years old and has worked on the floor for four years. He is rushed to the ER for a brain mri and becomes yet another patient, a neighbor to one of the patients who he once cared for. He is locked in, can’t move a muscle but retains full understanding of everything around him. His young wife is present before and after work and works diligently in the brain injury rehab process.
  • The next room houses a 21 year old man who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at a very young age. He has been there for years with his parents by his side. They live and breathe there and the stress of it all shows on their faces.
  • Two doors down is a retired prominent district attorney who worked his entire life to seek a perfect retirement. The day of his long awaited retirement he is involved in a rollover car accident. Here he is and has been for the last five years.
  • And then there are the ones who are dropped off and never seen again by their loved ones.

  • The 21 year old who overdosed on cocaine and survived. She was left behind in the sub-acute unit and never seen again by her parents or family. She died at the age of 42, alone.
  • There are the rich who come here. I’ve seen $100,000.00 bed’s come and go.

And then there’s the young who say “It could never happen to me” and they too end up with a brain mri and/or brain scan.

  • John, age 19, showed up on the 5th floor after his brain images revealed a brain aneurysm. Angry as hell and after several months of brain injury rehab his mother opted to put him in a group home. He remains angry, pissed off and has severe spasticity.

There are among the patients the ones who have diseases. There are the ones who’s muscles dance all day and others who’s muscles who don’t dance at all.

You can walk up and down the hall and know that each room has a story of it’s own.

    # 509 has it’s own story too.

  • Bed one lays a 32 year old who was hit by a car on his bicycle in a major supermarket parking lot. This patient lay after two surgeries (one to remove a portion of his skull to aid in the removal of a “bleed” and the second to reattach the saved skull.) (In some cases the “saved” skull is retained under the skin of the abdomen until it is needed) He is loved so much by his adopted father who waits by his side for any sign of recovery.
  • Bed two was home to our son.

  • Brain MRI are routinely done after brain injury and often shows damage to the cerebellum.

There is a main difference between where these patients remain and where others are sent after their brain mri..

The top ten 2008 brain injury rehab centers are:

  • The Rehabilitation Center of Chicago
  • The University of Washington Medical Center
  • The Kessler Institute of Rehabilitation in New Jersey
  • Memorial Hermann-TIRR
  • The Mayo Clinic’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center
  • Craig Hospital in Denver
  • Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston
  • Rusk Institute of the NYU Medical Center
  • Shepherd Center
  • Ohio State University Hospital
  • Researchers believe that a victim’s type and quality of care determines the outcome of their condition.
